1. Lead with your unit type and acuity level

Nurse managers scan for unit fit first. State your specialty (med-surg, telemetry, ICU) and patient load in both your title line and summary so it's immediately clear you've worked in a comparable environment.

2. Quantify everything you can

Vague bullets like 'provided patient care' tell hiring managers nothing. Convert your work into numbers: patient-to-nurse ratios, satisfaction percentile rankings, infection rate reductions, or the number of staff you trained.

3. List your EHR systems by name

Many healthcare ATS systems filter specifically for Epic, Cerner, or Meditech. If you've used them, name them explicitly in your skills section — don't bury them or list only 'Electronic Health Records.'

4. Highlight quality improvement involvement

Participation in QI initiatives, unit councils, or task forces signals a nurse who thinks beyond their own patient assignment. Even one bullet about a bundle compliance project or fall prevention committee adds significant weight.

5. Keep certifications current and clearly dated

List certification expiration years next to each credential. An expired ACLS on a resume raises an immediate red flag. If renewal is scheduled, note 'renewal pending' rather than leaving an expired date.

When I review RN resumes, I'm looking for two things within the first 10 seconds: what unit they worked on and whether their patient ratios are comparable to ours. If a nurse has telemetry experience and has managed 6–7 patients, I know they can hit the ground running here. Metrics and QI involvement seal the deal — those nurses make the whole unit better, not just their own assignment.

Common registered nurse resume mistakes

  • Using a functional resume format that hides employment gaps but also buries your most impressive clinical experience — chronological is almost always better for nurses.
  • Listing duties instead of outcomes — 'administered medications' is a job description, not a resume bullet. Pair every task with a result or a number.
  • Omitting the specific EHR platform — many facilities will filter out a resume that doesn't name the system they use.
  • Including an objective statement instead of a professional summary — objectives are outdated; a 3-4 sentence summary that mirrors the job posting keywords is far more effective.
