1. Name the EMR systems you've used

Practice managers often filter specifically for the EMR their clinic runs. If you've used Athenahealth, eClinicalWorks, Epic Ambulatory, or NextGen, list them by name in your skills section — not just 'EMR experience.'

2. Separate clinical and administrative skills

MAs are expected to do both, but emphasizing the clinical side (phlebotomy, EKG, injections) on a clinical MA resume and the administrative side (scheduling, coding, prior auth) on a front-office MA resume will land better depending on the role.

3. Include patient volume numbers

Saying you supported a 'busy clinic' means nothing. '80–100 patients per day across 12 exam rooms' tells a practice manager you can handle their pace. Patient volume is the single most context-giving metric on an MA resume.

4. Highlight any training or mentorship you've done

Even informally training one new hire shows initiative and reliability. MA turnover is high in most practices, so a proven ability to get new staff up to speed quickly is genuinely valued.

5. Match your certification abbreviation to what the job posting uses

Some postings say CMA (AAMA), others say RMA or CCMA. Check which certification body the employer expects and make sure your credential is clearly identified. Don't assume they'll know what your acronym means.

  • Listing the same generic duties ('took vitals, roomed patients, answered phones') for every job without any metrics or differentiation between roles.
